Moses and Jesus(JCOT, part 5)

Moses was born during a time when the Jews were being persecuted and he survived because his mom put him in a basket in the Nile. Herod killed every child under 2 at the birth of Jesus, he survived because the angel told Joseph to take Him to Egypt. This pattern allows me to make a very small aside, the spiritual forces behind these rulers(aka Pharaoh and Herod) knew God was doing something in these people. It’s no wonder that, just as Moses was to deliver the people of Israel from Egypt, so Jesus was to deliver His people from their sin. They both were rejected and dishonored by Israel, their ministries radically misunderstood. However, God showed His mighty power in both of their ministries. Before the angel of death went through Egypt to take the lives of the first born of all within Egypt, God gives Moses specific instructions to take a lamb and kill it and eat it and spread it’s blood over the door posts so the angel of death would “pass over” their house. This was the final saving act that delivered Israel from Egypt. Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, broke bread and said “take, eat, this is my body do this in remembrance of me” in the same way He took a cup of wine and said “take, drink, this is the blood of the covenant, shed for the forgiveness of sins” He also says “He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has life”. He is not only the second Moses, but the passover lamb. It is through His flesh and blood we have life. We are no longer slaves to sin, but children of God. Let us draw nigh to Him who came in the likeness of Moses, not to give the law, but to reveal “grace and truth”. It is in Him that God testifies His great love for you and me and everybody.
